Colic and other Gastrointestinal Diseases

Here at EVA-Woodforest Veterinary Medical Center, we specialize in colic treatment.

When our veterinarian comes out to your farm when your horse colics, we will ensure that we can control your horse’s pain quickly. We use many different treatments in order to do this. We can use mineral oil or other laxatives. Until the colic is resolved, we suggest not feeding your horse hay or grain.

Before you meet with the veterinarian, you can do some research to better assist them. You can check your horse’s temperature, heart rate, respiratory rate, mucous membrane color, capillary refill time, and gut sounds. As soon as our veterinarian is able to see your horse, we will first check the severity of the colic. About seventy-five percent of horses respond to treatment right away. Your horse has the best chance if we are able to diagnose him or her quickly and start proper treatment right away.

There are ways that colic can be prevented. Some of these include avoiding feeding them on sandy grounds, feeding your horse grains and pelleted feed only as needed, floating your horse’s teeth every six months, closely monitoring your horse’s health, and much more.

We want your horse to stay as healthy as possible throughout his or her entire life. We are always happy to assist you and your horse to ensure this. We are also available if you ever have any questions about colic treatment or any other inquiries about your horse.
